Who I am and who I am becoming

My name is Joseph England and I am a first-gen college student from a rural community college in the Sierra Nevada foothills, one of the smallest in California. Single-variable calculus is where mathematics stopped being a requirement and became the thing I wanted to spend my life on. I realized that if I got to teach and learn math as an occupation, I would never want to retire. So that is what brought me here.

Who I am becoming is a question I’d rather answer with work than with adjectives. I came here to find out how far my mathematical reasoning can go, and I intend to spend my time at UCLA finding out.

Three words that best describe me

Integrity

Ambition

Gratitude

In brief

I am a pure mathematics major at UCLA and a transfer student from one of the smallest community colleges in California. I found the subject in single-variable calculus and have set my sights on a career doing and teaching mathematics. What I’d want someone to remember about me is the journey it took me to get here, and that I am eager to keep going.
